Learn about the fascinating life of bees, see our urban beehives, and prepare to start a hive of your own. You’ll leave ready to select and order equipment, set up a langstroth or top bar hive, install your bees, and tend and inspect a hive. This is the first of two workshops designed to prepare you to keep bees in the city. Beekeeping II: Harvest and Winter Care is offered on Saturday, July 17.

Come cooperate with others to construct a mini eco-village while learning natural building techniques. Use your hands to build model homes using a mixture of clay, sand and straw, called “cob”, then use your imagination to create stories about people in the community. While we build, we’ll also bake bread in our cob oven. Adults register with children. Plan to save room in your car to take your creation home.

Join Pete Probst from Indigenous Energy to learn how to run your diesel engine on vegetable oil. After discussing environmental benefits of converting your car, we’ll learn all about obtaining and processing used vegetable oil, plus modifying your engine. The novice food preserver is invited to this basic introduction and practical skills course. After an overview of food safety and reasons to preserve, we jump right into hands-on demonstrations of freezing, dehydrating, and canning, using fresh strawberries as an example. Take a delicious jar of strawberry jam home with you!

New and returning beekeepers will learn methods for harvesting, extracting, and bottling honey, natural disease control, and preparing your hives for the winter months.
We’ll do a full hive checkup (weather permitting) and taste urban honey fresh from the comb.
We will also cover simple treatments to prevent pests and diseases, and review steps you need to take to help your bees survive the cold of winter.
Are Japanese beetles, slugs, rabbits and blight eating more from your garden than you are? After introducing the science of winemaking, we’ll jump right into making a small batch of wine. Each participant will use wild fruits to make at least one gallon of wine starter (or “must”) for fermenting at home. Participants with wild fruits at home (such as mulberries or grapes) are encouraged to bring them; otherwise, we'll gather them from the farm. If you have them, please bring a potato masher, a narrow-necked glass jug, and a five gallon food-grade bucket from home.

Learn how to grow herbs in your outdoor garden in the summer, as well as indoors for year round use. We’ll cover tips for starting, growing and harvesting a range of culinary herbs that can be used for medicinal purposes as well. Each student will make a self watering herb basket and calendula ointment to take home, as well as pesto and tea to try in class.

In this workshop for first time prospective horse owners, you can learn the basics of buying and caring for a horse or pony. We’ll discuss the food and care requirements involved in horse ownership, along with equipment and housing needs, and how to select the right horse for your family. A vet will teach what to look for in a healthy horse, and we’ll discuss shoeing and hoof care.

On Saturday, August 14th 2010, Angelic Organics Learning Center will
host our 4th Annual Farm Dinner!
Be our guest ~ Dine at the Farm! Celebrate healthy lands, local food and good company while supporting Angelic Organics Learning Center. Our Farm Dinner guests will experience a seasonal, five-course meal made from freshly harvested local food, lovingly prepared by rising chefs Christine Cikowski and Joshua Kulp of Sunday Dinner.

Green architect Roald Gundersen will present an overview of solar, energy efficient, and sustainable building design options, show examples of his recent design work, and interpret the features of the Learning Center buildings (including whole tree architecture, passive solar heating, strawbale walls, and two styles of composting toilets). The afternoon will provide an opportunity for students to present building plans for critique, create charrettes of their own dream buildings, and receive guidance on finding local resources from Roald. Come join us as we learn to build with cob, an age-old natural building technique with simple materials such as clay, sand, and straw. The emphasis will be on hands-on learning as we mix cob and earthen plaster, and provide you with the skills to build an oven in your own backyard. Class will meet in two locations (10 miles apart): at the Dome Gathering Space for building a new oven, and at Angelic Organics Learning Center for baking in a completed oven. Participants will be invited to help with work sessions on the oven foundation prior to the class.

After introducing the science of winemaking, we’ll jump right into making a small batch of wine. Each participant will use wild fruits to make at least one gallon of wine starter (or “must”) for fermenting at home. Participants with wild fruits at home (such as mulberries or grapes) are encouraged to bring them; otherwise, we'll gather them from the farm. If you have them, please bring a potato masher, a narrow-necked glass jug, and a five gallon food-grade bucket from home.
Join us for a tour and introduction to Angelic Organics, the Biodynamic vegetable farm in northern Illinois featured in the award-winning documentary film The Real Dirt on Farmer John. We will explore what makes this a Biodynamic and community supported agriculture (CSA) farm. Learn basic strategies for growing food without chemical inputs and see the seasonal work underway at the farm. Wear sturdy shoes (conditions may be muddy!) and clothes appropriate for the weather.
In this program for families with children, we'll learn all about the wriggly creatures that contribute to our soil. Make a small indoor worm bin (complete with worms!) to take home with you to begin composting veggie and fruit scraps right in your house. Families register together as one unit, and bring their own container (instructions provided) to house the worms.

Interested in learning how to raise livestock organically? We’ll learn from an experienced vet about the best housing conditions and nutrition for raising cattle, goats, chickens and horses on a small scale. We’ll cover common health challenges at different ages in the animals’ lives, how to recognize and prevent disease, and how to treat using both organic and alternative veterinary medicine.

Starting with ears of dried corn and eggs from our chickens, we’ll cook up a feast of tasty cornbread. Family members of all ages are welcome to take turns as we shuck, shell, winnow and grind the corn. Learn about the long history of corn, and receive a recipe and tips about seeds to bring home. Each family member registers.

Prepare food from the farm to bring home for your family’s Thanksgiving meal. We’ll use squash and eggs to make a delicious pie, cook bread in our earth oven, learn how to roast vegetables, and make decorations for the table. For children in 1st to 5th grade. Please bring a sack lunch. Each child will bring home their own bread, pie, and vegetables.

Let the kids spend a day at the farm making festive holiday decorations and gifts using the bounty of the farm. Kids will create and wrap at least eight gifts and decorations to share with friends and family, plus spend time with their animal friends. For children in 1st to 5th grade.
